A Healthy Pet is a Happy Pet
Is your pet healthy? Pets can have all sorts of health problems, many of which can be prevented with the proper care. I just want to briefly point out some areas of your pet’s life that can contribute to its well-being.
Nutrition
This is an obvious one. We want to make sure our pets are eating healthy. I’ve written another page specifically about food that you may want to look at, but the general consensus on food is that the more natural and raw it is, the better. You want to avoid artificial flavorings and by-products. Make sure your cat or dog has enough (but not too much!) to eat and drink throughout the day.
Dental Health
This one can easily get overlooked, but build-ups of plaque and tartar cause gingivitis and periodontitis. Dental disease could be a cause of kidney and heart disease in pets as well, because of the bacteria that builds up and then enters the bloodstream. So be sure to brush your pet’s teeth regularly and get them checked and cleaned by the vet as well.
Physical Exercise
Be sure that your pet has opportunities to be active. If you’ve got a small dog, like a Yorkie, it will probably get the exercise it needs without going for extended walks, but larger dogs will need a little more attention in this area. You don’t want your pet to become obese!
Mental Health
It’s important also to provide your pet with a loving atmosphere, free of abuse. Humans aren’t the only ones who don’t react well to stress! Animals can become depressed and anxious as well. If your pet is “acting out” you might want to pause and think of any way it could be stressed, and address it appropriately. Be sure to show your dog or cat love, and take time out to pet them (it’s relaxing!).
