Pet Friendly Apartments

Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart. Since becoming a dog owner this has been extremely difficult, living in Los Angeles. I don't know how it is elsewhere (I hear in Paris they just EXPECT you to have a dog) but if you find a place that allows you to have a dog you almost don’t want to leave! I spent months trying to find an apartment that would allow me, my cat, and my Yorkie. I endured being hung up on and other rude behavior. I finally bought a mobile home. Yes, there are rules on the pets there, too, but it was cheaper than a house and more pet friendly than an apartment. It really disappointed me how few places there were that allowed pets. The ones I found that did allow them, of course, wanted an extra deposit, and sometimes an extra amount in addition to the monthly rent. Of course, even that looks good when you've been searching for a month or two. You want to scream "THANK YOU for allowing pets, please take my money!!" Well, maybe. Anyway, if you’re considering moving into an apartment… good luck to you. Here's a few helpful resources.

You can search for pet friendly apartment listings around the country at PeopleWithPets.com. Or the new site, MyNewPlace.com. There is also PetRent.net , which has been helping people for 6 years. The site was formed by someone who volunteered at an animal shelter and saw how many pets had been given up because the landlords wouldn't allow them. I love people who take action like that!

If you are disabled and have a service or support dog, you should learn about your rights, because you will be allowed to have a service animal even in a "no pet" apartment building. See the below links for some information.
